Nepra Cuts Power Tariffs by Rs1.55/Unit for Summer Months to Ease Consumer Burden

ISLAMABAD: In a welcome relief for electricity consumers during the peak summer months, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Friday announced a reduction of Rs1.55 per unit in power tariffs across the country for May to July 2025, under its quarterly adjustment mechanism.

The reduction, which applies to all consumer categories except lifeline and prepaid users, is part of a Rs52.6 billion negative quarterly adjustment for the January–March period of FY2024-25. Nepra stated that the relief would be reflected uniformly at Rs1.5538 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Additionally, consumers of ex-Wapda distribution companies (Discos) will benefit from a 29-paisa per unit reduction through a negative fuel cost adjustment in May, while K-Electric consumers will enjoy an even larger cut of Rs3.64 per unit. This means that in May, Discos’ users will see Rs1.84 per unit in total relief, while K-Electric users will benefit from a total reduction of approximately Rs5.19 per unit.

The notification clarified that if bills for the adjustment period have already been issued, the relief will be applied to subsequent bills. Meanwhile, Nepra partially approved K-Electric’s proposed Rs6.62 per unit fuel cost reduction, instead passing on Rs3.64 per unit.

Nepra also urged Discos to tackle technical losses and infrastructure constraints, especially considering the growing integration of distributed solar generation. It directed utilities to conduct a comprehensive study within four months to assess the impacts of current Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff structures and recommend reforms aligned with shifting demand patterns and solar adoption trends.
